Live Unchained will Host Ava DuVernay’s ‘Middle of Nowhere’ Debut Film Night Friday, October 12th
Washington, D.C. (October 11, 2012) – Live Unchained™, an international arts events and media company, is hosting a film night for “Middle of Nowhere” debut on Friday, October 12th at 7:30 PM at Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14 Theaters, 701 Seventh Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. The film has received a lot of buzz from the New York Times to CNN and yesterday from Oprah on Twitter!
“Middle of Nowhere” tells the story of Ruby (played by lead actress Emayatzy Corinealdi), a woman who leaves medical school to support her husband’s defense when he (Omari Hardwick) is sentenced to 8 years in prison. Tension increases for Ruby when she takes an interest in another man (David Oyelowo) and learns a lot about herself, love and sacrifice in the process.
Live Unchained co-founder and president, Kathryn Buford, and intern, Kheprisa Burrell interviewed writer/director, Ava DuVernay, and lead actress, Emayatzy Corinealdi, in the organization’s new series “Live Unchained Art Lounge.” The discussion explored DuVernay and Corinealdi’s extensive research for the film, creative vision and a fun collectively improvised poem inspired by “Middle of Nowhere.”
The recent Live Unchained article, “A Gift to the Rebels,” cites Ava DuVernay’s innovative approach to filmmaking outside of the mainstream. Of her example, DuVernay states: “This is a model that I’m hoping other niche communities and people that are gathering and congregating around all kinds of films can learn to do. And it’s basically saying, ‘don’t wait for permission; don’t look to this corporate entity to say your film was good enough to put out’…We really are doing something that the studio and Hollywood system says can’t be done: Regular people distributing films, regular people deciding the fate of our films. Regular people saying, ‘You know what, maybe Hollywood doesn’t have all the answers as to what we want to see or what we can do.” The film is distributed by DuVernay’s grassroots organization, AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement).
Buford, a Sociology PhD student at the University of Maryland, College Park shares her enthusiasm for the film release: “I’m happy to celebrate this film with Live Unchained. The film’s message is so powerful and anyone who has known the pain of loss and being thrusted into a process of self-discovery can relate to the main character Ruby. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Ava DuVernay in person. She is so dynamic that when she walks into a room her energy transforms it; when her movies enter theaters they transform lives.”
