“Terabithia” Trio Inks Killer Deal
New York, New York (April 30, 2008) – Arcady Bay Entertainment (ABE), whose principals include the author, screenwriter and producer of the 2007 family hit “Bridge To Terabithia” (Walden/Disney – NYSE: DIS) has announced a 3 picture development deal with Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler’s Killer Films, the producers behind current releases “Then She Found Me” and “Savage Grace” and recent Oscar contender “I’m Not There”, as well as past critical favorites “Boys Don’t Cry”, “Happiness”, “Far From Heaven” and “One-hour Photo”.
The partnership, announced this week, involves a 3 picture “first look” deal, with the initial release to be a live action adaptation of “The Great Gilly Hopkins”, based upon another award-winning young adult novel from “Terabithia” author, Katherine Paterson. Shooting is slated to begin in Fall 2008.
“Killer is exactly the right partner to help us continue to make superlative family entertainment, and to capitalize on the terrific worldwide success of “Bridge”’ said John Paterson, VP of development for ABE. “Katherine’s work has won almost every award imaginable in the young adult category, and in a genre that is sometimes a little too focused on the next Happy Meal or action figure tie-in, we were seeking a partner better known for quality, integrity and fidelity to the story above all.”
The deal will also provide Killer with access to David Paterson’s portfolio of work. Prior to his writer/producer credit on “Bridge”, David wrote and produced the 2005 Sundance indie favorite “Love Ludlow” (Warner Home Video), for which he received a Humanitas nomination.
“Katherine and David’s work offers us a great opportunity to do for a younger audience what has always worked so well for us in the adult market – which is to bring unique, timeless stories together with innovative directors and passionate actors” added Christine Vachon, founder and co-president of Killer Films. “We are incredibly excited for the chance to broaden the scope of our film-making in this direction, and with these partners.”
Both companies will continue to operate independently out of their New York City locations.
